The central collage element in this
work is a torn fragment of a blackand-white proof of Motherwell’s 1967
lithograph 9: Untitled (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 56), to which a black
gestural form has been added. The
same print would be used in the Basque
Suite series of prints (Engberg and
Banach 2003, nos. 79–88), and in a
related group of paintings on paper,
