comments
The brown wrapping paper in this
collage is from the Museo Civico di
Torino, where Motherwell’s 1965
Museum of Modern Art retrospective
was shown in October 1966. The label
is addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner
Hempel; Mr. Hempel was chairman
of the board of the San Francisco Art
Institute and a prominent collector.
The package, postmarked January 20,
1967, was probably used to wrap the
Hempels’ copy of the catalogue from
the Turin exhibition.

This collage was made during the summer of 1967 in Provincetown. The title
refers to the beige paper near the center,
which is a mailing wrapper (postmarked

Silvers of Paris.
