comments
The paper support for this work is a
black-and-white proof of a 1967 lithograph, 9: Untitled (Engberg and Banach
2003, no. 56). The black oval form may
have been added around 1970, when
Motherwell was working on the I.H.
series.

comments
The collage element in this work is
torn from a proof of a 1962 lithograph,
The Poet I (Engberg and Banach
2003, no. 6). This is the first time that
Motherwell incorporated a fragment
c196
of one of his own prints in a collage, a
practice that would become a dominant
feature of his collages in the 1980s.
The title of this collage probably
refers to the title of a section in Part 1
of the Danish philosopher Søren
Kierkegaard’s Either/Or (1843).
