comments
This collage, which contains a torn
Gauloises cigarette package, was given
to the critic and curator H. H. Arnason,
who had recently begun to write about
Motherwell’s work, and would later
write the first monograph on the artist
(Arnason 1977b).

comments
The dark, spotted areas across the surface of this work are the result of mold
that cannot be removed. The work suffered water damage and the subsequent
consequences of improper storage after
the artist’s death.
