comments
This collage is the first in a numbered series that takes its title from
Motherwell’s use of paper from issues
of the Manchester Guardian Weekly,
mostly dated between December 29,
1966, and January 5, 1967. The numbering of this series (originally
composed of between twelve and
fourteen collages) is erratic because
Motherwell later revised and/or retitled
some of the works in it, in 1973 and
1986. For example, two works have at
one time in their history been known as
Guardian No. 3 (c171 and c743) and
two as Guardian No. 4 (c391 and c744).
In 1986 he reworked six collages in the
series and retitled them as the Figure “4”
series, while retaining their original
numbers from the Guardian series (see
c742, c743, and c745–c748). A seventh
Guardian collage was also reworked in
1986; Motherwell neglected to rename
it, so it remains Guardian No. 4 (c744).
Further complicating the nomenclature
of the series is the work now known
as The Figure “4” No. 8 (c174), which
Motherwell reacquired in 1986 and
renamed in accordance with the revised
1986 works, while not making any
changes to its original 1966 state.
Motherwell reacquired this work
around 1974, and gave it to Dr. Edward
Jemerin, who had performed surgery
on a member of his family.
