This collage was done during a
Caribbean cruise that Motherwell
and Helen Frankenthaler took from
December 17, 1965, to January 3, 1966.
In the couple’s 1965 datebook there is
a note by Helen Frankenthaler: “RM
collage ‘Caribbean Collage’ done on
this trip. Both did dwngs [sic] watercolors” (Dedalus Foundation Archives).
The collage element is a label from a
bottle of Worthington’s India Pale Ale.
