comments
The collage element at the center of
this work was torn from a painting on
paper by Motherwell; it is inscribed
with various notes, including a reminder
to “Call Steve”—a reference to Steven
Weil, then at the Marlborough-Gerson
Gallery. The entire inscription reads:
“Call Steve dimensions + titles +
dates + media of Rubin + Mayer (?)
pictures S E #102 Acrylic on canvas
S. in Italy #10 oil on linen Liberté
toute entière liberty wholly complete.”
