David Rockefeller for his son, who
sailed on one of the yachts in those
trials” (unpublished annotations to
exhibition catalogue text for Museum
of Fine Arts, Houston, exh. cat. 1972;
see “Writings by the Artist,” in the
Bibliography).
The composition appears to have
been inspired by Matisse’s 1952 cutpaper work La Voile (The Sail; see
fig. 105 in volume 1), which also evokes
the image of a sailing boat, and
which was exhibited at the Museum
of Modern Art in 1961 in The Last
Works of Matisse: Large Cut Gouaches.
Motherwell saw La Voile there, and it
was illustrated in the catalogue, which
he owned; see also the 1977 collage,
America Cup II (c599).
In 1965, Motherwell used this work
as the basis for a benefit poster for the
Paris Review (Engberg and Banach
2003, no. 17).
