The title of this collage refers to the
America’s Cup yacht race (commonly
referred to as the America Cup). The
printed collage element near the lower
right corner of this work is from a “10m
x 2m10” roll of No. 29 canvas, probably
meant to reinforce the idea of canvas
sails that is evoked by the large sail-like
form that dominates the composition.
Motherwell watched the America’s
Cup race on television in 1964. He later
remarked on the context in which the
collage was created: “Was watching the
America Cup races at the time. [This
collage] was ultimately purchased by
