This collage takes its title from the label
attached to the paper wrapping for U.S.
Art Canvas Company pasted at the

upper center. The number 7 written at
the lower right in pencil was originally
inscribed to indicate that this work was
number 7 in the Beside the Sea series
before Motherwell revised it by adding
the collage element and changing the

Claessens Belgian artist’s canvas, which
is part of the paper collage element at
the upper left center. The number 9 in
pencil inscribed at the lower right indicates that this work was meant to be
Beside the Sea No. 9 before the collage
element was added and the title
